Precautions

Please be advised you will be walking in the mountains, so it is important to be well-prepared. Carefully read the following precautions to assure that your walk is enjoyable and safe. Also, please be respectful of plants and animals, and be sure to take all of your garbage with you.

Precautions

  • Submit a mountain entry report and inform someone close to you of the schedule and course before entering the mountains.
  • Be sure to bring a flashlight, first aid kit, rain gear, and emergency rations.
  • Cell phone reception is poor in many areas. Prepare a map or something that will allow you to locate your position.
  • It is easy to get lost in the mountains, and trekking alone can be dangerous. If you get lost, turn around and go back until you find the trail. (It is unadvisable to go down into valleys, as there are waterfalls and you may get slip.)
  • There are many leeches along the way. We recommend wearing spats or other countermeasures. Check for leeches at every break.
  • To avoid bears, carry a bell or make your presence known by talking or other means.
  • During the winter months, snow can make walking difficult, and although most of it melts by May, there may be some remaining snow in the shade.
  • In some areas, you will be walking on roadways with no sidewalks, so please watch out for vehicles.
